How to Choose the Best Lash Style for Your Client’s Eye Shape

Updated: Aug 24

A client shows you a beautiful Cat Eye set and says, “I want exactly this.”
But will the same lash style actually work on her eyes?
This is one of the hardest parts of lash design. Knowing what Cat Eye, Doll Eye or Open Eye means is easy. Choosing the right lash style for the individual client is different.
Eye shape matters, but there is no simple formula where one eye shape automatically equals one lash map.
Start With the Result, Not the Style Name
When a client asks for Cat Eye, first understand what she actually wants from it.
Does she want her eyes to look more elongated? More lifted? More dramatic?
Clients usually describe the style they know, not necessarily the effect they want.
This is also why reference photos can be misleading. The woman in the photo has different eyes, proportions and natural lashes. Copying the same lash mapping does not guarantee the same result.
Instead of asking, “How do I copy this set?” ask:
“What does my client like about this set, and how can I create that effect on her?”
See the Lash Design Before You Create It
When you are deciding between two lash styles, you no longer have to rely only on imagination.
Botanica Lashes is a professional lash design and consultation app for lash artists that lets you preview different lash styles directly on your client’s photo before starting the set.
Take a photo or choose one from the gallery and compare Natural, Open Eye, Doll Eye, Cat Eye and Extreme Cat Eye on the same client.
You can also adjust the length, curl, volume and color.
If you are unsure whether Cat Eye or Open Eye will create a better effect, show both.
If the client asks for longer lashes but you think a shorter length will suit her better, compare them.
Instead of spending five minutes trying to explain the difference, let her see it.

Eye Shape Is Only Part of the Decision
Two clients can both have almond eyes and still look completely different with the same lash design.
The position of the outer corners, proportions, eyelids, natural lashes and desired effect all matter.
This is why searching for the perfect lash mapping for almond eyes, lash mapping for hooded eyes or lash mapping for downturned eyes can only take you so far.
Those guidelines can help you understand lash styling principles, but the final design still needs to work on the individual client.
For example, Cat Eye is often chosen to create an elongated effect. But on some eyes, too much visual weight toward the outer corner can make the eye appear heavier instead.
The important question is not:
“Is Cat Eye good for this eye shape?”
It is:
“What does this Cat Eye actually do to this client’s eyes?”
For Beginner Lash Artists
If you are a beginner lash artist, it is normal to understand lash mapping in theory and still hesitate when a real client sits down.
Should you choose Cat Eye or Open Eye?
Is the outer corner too long?
Will this length overpower the eyes?
Would another curl work better?
You do not need to memorize an answer for every possible eye shape.
Learn to look at the overall effect of your decisions.
Botanica Lashes gives you a visual way to compare those decisions before committing to the set.
It does not replace professional lash education. It helps you apply what you have learned to the individual client.
For Experienced Lash Artists
Experienced artists usually have a different problem.
You may already know what you recommend, but your client cannot see why.
She asks for Cat Eye. You think another design will suit her better.
Instead of simply saying, “I wouldn't recommend that,” show her both options.
A visual lash consultation makes your professional reasoning easier to understand and can make the entire service feel more personalized and premium.
For lash artists building a higher-end client experience, the consultation itself becomes another way to demonstrate expertise.
Agree on the Design Before You Start
Words like “natural,” “long,” “full” and “not too dramatic” mean different things to different clients.
Do not wait until the client looks in the mirror after the appointment to discover that you were imagining different results.
With Botanica Lashes, you can agree on the visual direction first.
Once the design is selected, copy the style, length, curl, volume and color as a lash formula and paste it into your notes or CRM.
The selected style also includes a lash mapping guide you can use as a practical reference during the application.
Preview → Compare → Agree → Copy the Formula → Use the Mapping Guide
Choose the Design for the Client in Front of You
There is no single best lash style for every almond, round, hooded or downturned eye.
Professional lash styling still requires knowledge, experience and judgment.
But choosing a design does not have to mean guessing how it will look or asking your client to imagine it.
Botanica Lashes lets you see and compare the lash design on your client before you create the set.
